Chapter Eleven

Jane forced herself to work that night. But as she sculpted clay, forming noses, mouths, delicately etching the wrinkles and lines that gave each face its distinctive personality, a part of her mind strayed to the subject of Matt Sullivan. And that kiss.

She knew what had led up to that moment, at least her part of it. She’d been infatuated with Matt practically from the time he walked into her hospital room, over a year ago. Her adolescent state of mind at the time had led her to picture Matt as the hero in the books she read, even if the character had blond hair.

Zoe had helped her see that this emotional inexperience had also prevented her from recognizing Kyle Rogers as a sexual predator. And as frightening as that experience had been, it had forced her to grow up—taught her not to take people at face value, and had put an end to the need to please that had underscored her earlier interactions with people of all genders. She had learned to take control of her life.

Or, Jane wondered, had she just learned to manage it into a small, safe circle?

When Matt Sullivan came back into her life, he’d asked just that—then all but dared her to step out of the secure, predictable world she’d locked herself into. And, she told herself, she’d accepted the challenge. A bit reluctantly, perhaps, but she hadn’t run away completely.

And she wasn’t going to now, Jane told herself as she placed the finished faces onto a backing sheet to dry before their trip to the oven. She hurried into her pajamas, then got into bed, determined to go to sleep. But when she closed her eyes, all she could see was Matt’s eyes, shadowed with pain, even as his lips curved into a smile.

The kiss they had shared, she realized, was just like that seemingly carefree smile of his—a way of dealing with frustration, of shutting off the emotions that their argument had cued up. She doubted it had anything to do with any romantic feelings he might have for her.

Jane had read about a lot of conflicted heroes. The actions of these men seemed so understandable in the pages of a book, but she had no narrator to tell her what was going on in Matt’s mind. No guide to assure her that he really was one of the good guys, someone who was capable of returning love, rather than just inspiring it. No clue to the source of his pain. Only her heart whispering to trust.
